At Guidant Global, we’re proud to shine a light on colleagues who go the extra mile for inclusion, both at work and beyond. Stephen Salmon’s journey is a testament to perseverance, community spirit, and the impact one individual can have in making a difference for others.
His story, both personal and professional, is a powerful reminder of why embracing diversity and inclusion is so vital in every workplace.
Overcoming challenges and finding purpose
Stephen works at Guidant Global as a Senior Marketing Executive, having spent six and a half years prior to this serving in the British Army.
He has been a wheelchair user for 18 years. Before the pandemic, he’d been volunteering teaching wheelchair skills at Whizz Kidz - a UK-based charity focused on empowering young wheelchair users by providing customised mobility equipment and support to help them achieve greater independence.
However, three years ago, his path took an unexpected turn following a serious health emergency which also led to vocal cord paralysis. This experience changed his voice and closed off the volunteering he had been enjoying and was excited about.
But rather than letting setbacks define him, Stephen chose to rebuild, focusing on health, happiness and rediscovering his sense of self. “It’s taken me three years to feel healthy, happy, and like myself again,” Stephen shares. His resilience and determination are clear in his journey back to fitness and advocacy.
Stephen has participated in 6 marathons in the last 5 years, raising money and awareness for Whizz Kidz.
These funds will enable access to equipment, education, employment, and opportunity. In addition, his own comeback story is an inspiration to other wheelchair users. Stephen counts one of his greatest achievements as one young wheelchair user going from watching him participate, to wheeling in the Mini London Marathon, and planning his own future marathon.
“Crossing the finish line each time is about closing chapters of frustration, doubt and false hope, and moving forward with purpose,” Stephen says, echoing the values he champions at Impellam and within Talent Marketing. “But most of all it's hoping that by me doing that, I’m showing others they can do the same.”
Championing inclusive workplaces
For Stephen, inclusion isn’t just a buzzword - it’s a lived experience. He believes that removing barriers opens up a world of opportunity for everyone, especially young people with disability-based challenges.
Stephen’s perspective highlights the importance of workplaces where people with disabilities feel welcome and valued. True inclusivity means ensuring everyone has a chance to find their place in the world, somewhere safe and happy, regardless of their circumstances.
Stephen’s journey is all about celebrating comebacks – on the road, at work, and in life. As he prepares to wheel the London Marathon once again, he reminds us of the power of purpose and the importance of supporting charities like Whizz Kidz.
At Guidant Global, we’re honoured to share Stephen’s story and champion the values of inclusion he embodies. Here’s to comeback stories and workplaces that welcome everyone, helping each person find their place and thrive.
If you’d like to support Stephen’s inspiring journey and help to make a real difference, please consider sponsoring him in this year’s London Marathon.
